Melissa Paris to WSS at Miller

Melissa Paris receives invite for World Supersport event at Miller Motorsports Park

MPH Racing is excited to announce that Melissa Paris has been invited back to compete in World Supersport as part of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship at Miller Motorsports Park. Last year, Melissa received an invite to compete, despite having only competed in one pro race prior. Working with an extremely limited budget, Melissa became the first female to qualify for a World Supersport Championship event. Although she was the top qualifying wild card rider, she suffered a mechanical and was sidelined early in the race.

MPH Racing is currently exploring sponsorship opportunities to see if participating in this event will be economically feasible. Racing with competitive equipment for this event will add considerable expense outside of the planned budget for the AMA season.

Ten Kate Still all over WSS – Qualifying, Phillip Island

Kenan Sofuoglu and Michele Pirro will both start from the front row of the grid for tomorrow’s opening 2010 World Supersport championship race at Phillip Island in Australia.

The Hannspree Ten Kate Honda riders set the second and third fastest times respectively in this afternoon’s final qualifying session, with Spain’s Joan Lascorz taking pole position and Ireland’s Eugene Laverty completing the front row as the third fastest Honda rider.

After struggling with grip and tyre durability in yesterday’s warm conditions at the 4.445km Phillip Island circuit, the World Supersport championship’s most successful team made progress in today’s cooler conditions and both riders are confident for tomorrow’s season-opening 21-lap race.

Kenan Sofuoglu – P2 1’34.116s

That wasn’t so bad and I am really much happier than I was after yesterday’s sessions. We have really improved our package today and I only hope that it stays cool for the race tomorrow. I think I could have gone faster but on both my fast laps I came across slower riders which took away my rhythm. I think maybe I could have taken three or four tenths off my time, but I am happy enough with a front row start. It’s important to get a good start tomorrow because I will try, of course, to win the race. We also found a way to get a longer life for the tyre today and I will do my best to save it for the end of the race tomorrow.

Michele Pirro – P3, 1’34.156s

Well, of course I am happy because I said yesterday that my target today was to get a front row start. We achieved this goal but I had some problems with grip at the front, especially on the corner exit. The bike is new for me this season so the race tomorrow will be my first. It’s difficult to know what to expect but, for sure, there are a lot of fast riders and they will be at the front in the race. I am looking forward to it, but the front row is a good place to start.

Well, after the problems we had during the test here and yesterday, we put on a clean shirt today and made the improvements we needed.  Things really started to shape up for us today and I am delighted that both riders will start from the front row. Big compliments especially to Michele who has arrived immediately at the front in his debut for the team. Hopefully, both riders can finish the job off tomorrow.

Crutchlow and Toseland make progress at Phillip Island

Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike riders Cal Crutchlow and James Toseland made a purposeful start to the first race weekend of the season today at the Phillip Island circuit. The riders faced a day of serious heat with track temperatures hitting 45°C. Having now solved the chatter issues that dominated the test last week, both Crutchlow and Toseland spent both the practice and qualifying sessions exploring the limits of the 2010 bike. With significant power increases across the rev range through off-season engine development, this was the first real opportunity for the riders to experience the changes and work on the set up of their bikes in advance of race day.

The high track temperatures drastically reduced grip on the track surface, causing Toseland to lose the back end of his R1 in turn 11, becoming one of seven riders to fall in the session. He was unhurt and came back out on his second bike.

One of the developments of the bike for 2010 include a lighter carbon fuel tank, this was changed to the heavier 2009 tank for today’s sessions, seeming to help eliminate the chatter issue.

Cal Crutchlow, Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team (10th 1′33.038)
“I think we’ve worked hard and got rid of the chatter problem. The 2009 parts that we’ve used seem to have helped us in that way. The tank and the seat unit seemed to have stopped the chatter now. If you look at our times, although we’re not initially fastest straight away we’ve got consistency across the sessions. We’ve got some more areas to work on and I’m looking forward to making the bike even better tomorrow. We’ve got a good direction to work in, it was just a little unfortunate that the track temperature was so hot today. Even so we were still doing the same times as Ben’s race pace from last year. Hopefully it will cool off over the next couple of days and work better for us.”

James Toseland, Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team (13th 1′33.422)
“Unfortunately had a big crash today coming out of the penultimate corner which didn’t help things. I did go back out on the other bike but had a pain in my hand so came in as I wanted to make sure it was ok. We’re definitely making improvements, we’ve just had a lot to do in one day to work through the package. We’re only a bit over a second off pole now so we’ll focus down and keep moving forward tomorrow.”

Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team Manager
“Today we rode two practice sessions without chattering which is a very good improvement, so now the riders have to find the limits of the 2010 bike. Last weekend they couldn’t as the chatter held them back. Looking at this as the first day I think we’ve improved quite a lot. Unfortunately James crashed but he is fine, so we will see what they can both do tomorrow.”

Ten Kate SuperSport – Phillip Island Qualifying

Less than three tenths of a second separated the top five riders after this afternoon’s opening qualifying session for this weekend’s first round 2010 World Supersport championship race at Phillip Island in Australia.

Hannspree Ten Kate Honda rider, Kenan Sofuoglu, set the third fastest time in this afternoon’s 45-minute session, which took place in temperatures of more than 30 degrees with a track temperature of almost 50 degrees. The Turkish rider was just 0.054s behind provisional pole sitter, Joan Lascorz.

Sofuoglu’s new team-mate for 2010, Michele Pirro, was fifth fastest today, his debut competitive outing for the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team. The 23-year-old Italian was less than two tenths behind his more experienced team-mate and only three tenths away from Lascorz’s time.

Kenan Sofuoglu – P3, 1’34.683s

I am actually very disappointed because it seems that we have only two tyre options and we are experiencing problems with both. We have a pretty good set-up to do a fast lap, but we have had to concentrate today’s time on trying to make the tyres last. I know I can probably go 0.5s faster but there is no point going for that. We don’t have many ideas for a solution right now, but we will all sit down later and try to come up with some ideas for tomorrow.

Michele Pirro – P5, 1’34.918s

The times are very close so I am not so unhappy with my performance today. The bike is not perfect, however, and we have worked hard to find the right set-up and tyre choice for the race on Sunday. Tomorrow we will try some different ideas to get the tyre to work better and I will try very hard for a front row starting position.

We have spent a lot of time today trying to find a good race set-up. Although we’re not far off, there is still a lot more to come. We have both riders fully up there and we’re confident that things will improve both tomorrow and on Sunday.

Yamaha – Imola test

The World Superbike Championship has the Italian round of Imola back on the calendar this year so the teams have spent the last two days testing their machines there in preparation for the upcoming races on the 27th September. The track is new for both Ben Spies and Tom Sykes however it was clear from the two day test that neither the lack of track knowledge or the sweltering Italian sunshine was going to prevent them from displaying some serious pace. Day one saw Spies leading the field until the very end of the sessions where rive Fabrizio made a couple of extra tenths on fresh tires. Day two such much of the same with the American rider working through his set up and understanding the circuit in advance of the race in September.

Team mate Sykes was showing the consistent turn of speed we are now seeing from the British rider and ended the first day second fastest Brit in the pack in seventh place behind Bryne in sixth. Day two saw the morning session go well for Sykes, moving up to fifth and shaving three tenths of the previous day’s time, he held onto the fifth spot at the end of the day and came away in confident mood for the upcoming Brno round.

“It’s been a really good couple of days testing for me, we’ve not been out there trying to be the fastest guys, but have been focused on working through the set up of the bike to make sure we have everything ready for when we race here and also just to shake it down. It’s been really hot so I’m looking forward to getting away from the track now and relaxing before we go to Brno next week.”

Tom Sykes, Yamaha World Superbike Team
“I started off had a good chat with the team here and then moved into testing with a good plan in mind. We worked through quite a lot on the bike including suspension and brakes and tried some new tires too and it all came good. I ended up fifth overall which was good, where we should be nearer the top. It’s certainly where I want to be and closing the gap on the front now. Hopefully we’re heading to Brno with more information from the test and we’ll be strong there.”

“in the end it was a good test for us. Both riders now know the Imola circuit. We tested some new tires as well which were interesting. We also worked a lot on the bike set up with both riders. Unfortunately the temperature was really high here which made it tough. We’re ok and ready for the next race where we have to catch Noriyuki up and we’re ready to be more focused for the championship win.”

Crutchlow on fire in the Italian Sunshine

Yamaha World Supersport rider Cal Crutchlow continues to be the man to catch in the World Supersport Championship after displaying more of the blistering speed at Imola that has kept him at the front of the pack so far this year. The first day of testing ended with Crutchlow setting a 1’52.9 lap, over six tenths faster than any other rider on the track, another he has never ridden before. Day two saw more impressive riding as he consistently led the field, only passed by Sofuoglu in the dying stages of the day.

Team mate Fabien Foret got quietly down to business in day one, putting in impressive laps to finish the day fourth in the standings two tenths of a second behind title challenger Eugene Laverty. Day two saw the French rider put down more consistent times to end in fourth.

The Yamaha World Supersport Team also took part in a one day test at Brno last week. The test was Fabien Foret’s first run on the Czech circuit since he crashed there last year. It was Crutchlow’s first time at Brno however the English rider was fast from the off, going under the lap record in the process.

“It’s been really good for me to come here and learn the circuit, I didn’t use anywhere near as many tires as some of the other riders so was really happy with the times I’ve managed to put in. I’m looking forward to coming back and racing here. I also had a good run in Brno last week, great to get the lap record and I’m really excited about racing there next week.”

“I’m really happy with my riding here. I’ve found some tires I really like which has helped me find the front end a bit more on the bike so I’m looking forward to testing that in race conditions. Brno was interesting last week, it was a big deal to come back here after my crash last year so it was very important to go round the track and feel ok.”

Wilco Zeelenberg, Yamaha World Supersport Team Manager
“We are very pleased with what we have achieved here, Cal has been fast on both days. We tried everything we wanted to test and we come away with some good information. We’ve learnt some things for the race here as well. Fabien found a really good front tire and finishing fourth behind the top guys is good so he’s pleased. For Brno it was good to come back to a track where Fabien had big crash last year and it was important for Cal to learn the track and he broke the lap record so it’s fair to say he likes it there! Let’s see how he goes next week.”

Kawasaki Supersport Success – Superbike… not so good | World SBK

Kawasaki World Superbike Team rider Broc Parkes recorded 14th in race two at Donington as a difficult race weekend finally delivered a couple of points for the team’s great efforts.  Parkes’ team-mate Jamie Hacking was out of the top 15 in race one, and was unfortunate to fall in the second 23-lap contest, running of track, toppling over in the sand on lap two and being unable to restart.

Parkes battled in the turns at Donington, and despite some tire choice issues in race two he came good in a multiple rider battle for the last points. The Aussie rider is 18th in the standings, on 27 points after nine of 14 events.

Hacking, replacing injured team regular Makoto Tamada once again, was racing at home in some regards as he was born in the UK and still has dual citizenship. His characteristic grit shone through in race one, going from 30th and last to 18th. Local wild card rider Simon Andrews used his track knowledge to score a top ten in race two, on his MSS Ninja ZX-10R.

After a test at Imola on July 15th and 16th, the team will go to Brno on July 24-26 for round ten of the series.

Broc Parkes: “We got some points at the end. The first race we got a really bad start but a good pace, and came from 29th to 18th. It was a difficult weekend chassis wise and we haven’t been able to find a set-up on the bike that handled well. Second race we had a much better start but in the middle it started jumping out of gear, selecting neutrals, coming in and out. I think I chose the wrong tire for race two compared to race one, because the lap times were not quite as good. That was just because of the slight change in track temperature, I think.”

Jamie Hacking: “In race one I wasn’t comfortable starting that far back after seeing how crazy the starts are, so I backed off a bit and was last away. I played catch up as far as I could and then I had really bad arm pump from hanging on so hard. I struggled from then on. We had some discussions about doing the approach to Coppice a different way in race two, and I gave it a try and the bike ran off the racetrack into the gravel trap. I had it pretty much saved but it finally spun out and toppled over.”

Lascorz Second In The Race And Fourth In The Points

During a warm and eventually sunny raceday at Donington, Joan Lascorz rode to a hard-fought and well-deserved second place in the 22-lap Supersport race. The Spanish rider added to his second place finish from Monza with his second 20-point score of the year, finishing five seconds from race winner Cal Crutchlow.

Lascorz had been in the running for a podium position in characteristically aggressive style, taking the lead for the first three laps until Crutchlow passed by. He held on for second in fine style, finishing almost ten seconds ahead of third place rider, Garry McCoy.

The early laps promised two top six positions for the Kawasaki Provec Motocard.com squad, as Katsuaki Fujiwara was on a good pace at the sharp end of the action, but a collision with another rider stopped him in his tracks when both crashed out early on.

Both Joan and Katsuaki were enthused by the increasing capabilities of their Ninja ZX-6R machines at this meeting, and expect even more advances for the next round at Brno, on July 26.

Joan Lascorz: “That equalled my best result this year, and the machine is working very well now, even better than Misano, so big congratulations to all the team. Halfway through the race Cal upped his pace a little bit and I was not able to go with him, so I had to settle for second place, but I am very happy anyway.”

Katsuaki Fujiwara
: “I was behind Aitchison when we were going downhill into the Old Hairpin then he had a highside and went a bit loose, so I passed him. Then his bike gripped again and it jumped into my path. It was really easy to follow McCoy and he made a podium finish. So only bad luck today, the bike was very good and we are much more consistent with it now. It is all going forward, so Brno should be a good one for us again.”

Ten Kate – Friday, FP1 | WSS

Hannspree Ten Kate Honda riders, Kenan Sofuoglu and Andrew Pitt, finished in fifth and 12th place after today’s opening free practice session for Sunday’s ninth round World Supersport championship race at Donington Park, UK.

As the Hannspree duo continued testing new suspension parts and combinations, it was Britain’s Cal Crutchlow who set the fastest time at the end of today’s hour-long practice session.

Sofuoglu was the more comfortable of the two Hannspree Ten Kate riders and was preparing for a quicker lap time before rain began to fall with ten minutes of the session remaining, forcing the Turkish rider to shelve his plans until tomorrow.

Kenan Sofuoglu – P5, 1’34.175s

We were going in a good direction since the race in America, but today we were still testing different suspension components. I’m quite happy with the package and was ready to go for a faster time, but the rain came at the end of the session. Tomorrow, we’ll keep going in the good direction and aim for a good grid position for Sunday’s race. I’m confident because I’m back with my 2006 mechanic Rutger this weekend, while Gert and his wife wait for their new baby. I send them all my best wishes and good luck!

Andrew Pitt – P12, 1’35.209s

It’s been difficult today because I haven’t really been able to grab any brakes without the rear coming round and trying to overtake me. In fact, there’s a bit of a problem with the rear generally, both on entry and exit when I’m trying to get the power down. It feels like I’m using a cold tyre for the whole lap, so we’re still looking for the right balance at the moment. We’ll keep looking in the morning and keep pushing forward.

I think Kenan is already pretty much happy with everyt! hing, so we will use tomorrow for fine tuning and to get a good starting position for Sunday’s race. On Andrew’s side of the garage, there is a bit more work to do but we’re used to hard work and will spend a lot of time tonight seeing where we can improve things for tomorrow.

Not to undermine the spectacle that was the last lap at Catalunya between Rossi and Lorenzo but some af you may have missed the last lap of the Supersport race at Miller.  That’s more than we could bare…
