2009 British Superbike Series Calendar Announced

New look for 2009 British Superbike Championship calendar

Intriguing mix of top British and International riders ready for action at the UK’s leading circuits

There is a new, exciting look about the 2009 British Superbike calendar announced today by the series promoters and organisers MotorSport Vision, which takes place across twelve events at ten leading UK circuits.

The action, which sees the GSE team defending their crown with riders Leon Camier and James Ellison onboard factory-backed Yamahas, begins on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit over the Easter weekend. This opening meeting has been extended to four days, allowing for additional testing and extensive support race action ahead of the Holiday Monday feature races.

The big break with tradition is that the Kent circuit will not host the final round of the series. Instead, that will be held at Oulton Park over the weekend of 9/10/11 October. The Cheshire circuit is hugely popular with fans and riders and will provide a spectacular setting for the 2009 finale.

Brands Hatch will host its second round on the full Grand Prix circuit over the weekend of 7-8-9 August, with the circuit aiming to continue the festival type atmosphere that has been enjoyed there in mid-summer with the World championship. This round will feature major on and off-track content and entertainment of which further details will be announced by the circuit operators very soon.

Around these meetings, there is early season Holiday Monday action at Oulton Park on 4 May, and then Donington Park on 25 May, with little respite before the teams take on the challenges of the high-speed Thruxton circuit in Hampshire on 31 May.

Knockhill again hosts the Scottish round of the championship on 5 July, with Mallory Park holding the seventh round two weeks later. Cadwell Park will again stage its ‘party in the park’ on August Bank Holiday weekend, ahead of the late season action at Croft on 13 September, and the penultimate round at Silverstone on 27 September.

The championship continues to feature factory-supported teams from leading manufacturers, with Australians Glen Richards and Josh Brookes spearheading the HM Plant Honda bid to recapture the crown, while former MotoGP star Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli continues the international flavour as he rides for Crescent Suzuki.

Simon Andrews, together with Julien Da Costa, races for MSS Colchester Kawasaki while Chris Walker returns from WSB to ride for Rob Mac Yamaha. Japanese rider Atsushi Watanabe returns for a second term in the championship with Relentless Suzuki joining young gun Ian Lowry.

“We believe that we have the most competitive domestic Superbike championship in the world with the calibre of riders and machines already entered and the new look calendar adds spice, with variation and a range of circuits that fully test the capabilities of all competitors,” explained Series Director Stuart Higgs.

The 2009 British Superbike Championship calendar is as follows:

    Round #, Date, Venue

Round 1 April 10/11/12/13 Brands Hatch Indy

Round 2 May 2/3/4 Oulton Park

Round 3 May 23/24/25 Donington Park

Round 11 September 25/26/27 Silverstone

Round 12 October 9/10/11 Oulton Park

Haslam double win at Cadwell Park – BSB

Leon Haslam 2008

HM Plant Honda’s Leon Haslam took his first double win of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship season this afternoon after another incredibly close race at Cadwell Park.

Haslam said: “The weekend didn’t start great here for me, I had the crash in practice then we had a wet session and qualifying didn’t go according to plan and I was fourth. But the HM Plant Honda worked like a dream today, it was unfortunate for Cal to crash out but these things happen. To get the first double win of the year for the HM Plant Honda team is great and I think it might be the first time the team have taken the double here at their local circuit. We had a bit of bad luck at the start of this year and I did lack a bit of confidence but the team have worked hard and the bike has increased ten-fold now and we are back to winning ways.”

It was Tom Sykes who took the lead in to Coppice on the opening lap onboard the Rizla Suzuki, with Cal Crutchlow and Leon Haslam formation flying in second and third.

It wasn’t going to be a strong double result for the second HM Plant Honda though; Crutchlow crashed out on the third lap as the pack streamed in to Hall Bends. The engine casing appeared to touch the curb and down he went, and in doing so relegated himself to fourth in the standings. Crutchlow did pick up the bike and but in a determined performance to pick up points, working his way back to 15th place.

Haslam was then in second and closing down the leading Rizla Suzuki rider, with Haslam repeating his move from the first race when he dived down the inside at Park on lap six to take the lead.

Haslam and Sykes were then inseparable as the pair diced at the front, with ‘The Grinner’ looking for any opportunity to take back the advantage but it wasn’t enough and he had to settle for second again, but also moved second in the overall standings.

Meanwhile the Airwaves Ducati’s were lying third and fourth, with Leon Camier passing Michael Rutter at Coppice on the sixth lap to move behind his team-mate. Camier then was closing in on ‘Shakey’ and he attempted to take the inside line Coppice, but once marginally ahead Byrne managed to come right back to keep third place and his second podium of the day.

Byrne said: “I would like to have had a few more laps as we had closed on Leon and Tom and I would have been able to try and pass. I knew it was going to be difficult at the start of the race but it was all coming together towards the end of the race. I rode as hard as I could but just needed those few more laps. We are still leading the championship and that’s all that matters. We have struggled a bit here but if struggling is two third places then that’s not bad at all. I just need to thank the Airwaves Ducati team for their hard work this weekend.”

Bennetts British Superbike Championship, Cadwell Park, race two result:

1. Leon Haslam (HM Plant Honda)
2. Tom Sykes (Rizla Suzuki) +0.541s

10. Karl Harris (Rob Mac Racing Yamaha) +37.426s

Bennetts British Superbike Championship standings after Cadwell Park:

1. Shane Byrne (Airwaves Ducati) 364
2. Tom Sykes (Rizla Suzuki) 254
3. Leon Haslam (HM Plant Honda) 249
4. Cal Crutchlow (HM Plant Honda) 236
5. Leon Camier (Airwaves Ducati) 205

The next round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship takes place at Croft on 12/13/14 September.

Haslam holds off Sykes – BSB – Results

HM Plant Honda

HM Plant Honda’s Leon Haslam continued his tradition of winning a BSB race at Cadwell Park again this season by stealing the advantage from Tom Sykes on the Rizla Suzuki.

Haslam said: “There was a lot of pressure coming in to this weekend and this really is one of my favourite tracks. Having won here every year I knew I had to do it again here today so I am pleased that I got it out of the way after the first race! At the start of the race I was behind Tom comfortably and I was trying to match him around the circuit and look at where he might be struggling. I didn’t push too hard when I was in the lead and it wasn’t until afterwards I found out that he had made a mistake but he did close in on that last lap so I got my head down and got the win so I am happy with that.”

It was Sykes that got the flier off the line on the Rizla Suzuki with the HM Plant Honda duo of Haslam and Cal Crutchlow tucked in behind as the pack streamed through Coppice for the first time.

On lap four it was the end of another race for Karl Harris when he fell at the bottom of the Mountain when he lost the front end of the Rob Mac Racing Yamaha.

Sykes then held the lead, with Haslam shadowing his every move and it was only a matter of time before the HM Plant Honda rider decided to attempt his pass. Sykes was not able to defend as the ‘Pocket Rocket’ dived down the inside at Park.

Haslam was able to edge out an advantage as Sykes went hard into Barn, with a visible gap between the pair as they reached Coppice. However Sykes was not going to give up without a fight though and by the penultimate lap he had closed back in on him but there was just not enough time for Sykes to make a move to regain the lead.

Meanwhile the battle was on for third, with Crutchlow dropping down the pack with a chatter problem. It was then a Ducati shootout with Michael Rutter on the North West 200 Ducati liveried machine leading at the start, but Byrne was on target to get back on the podium and past him at Park on lap ten.

Byrne said: “I have been standing on the bottom steps of the podium a bit too much recently. All credit to the Airwaves Ducati team though as they have been working really hard this weekend. I didn’t get a good start and the guys at the front just got away. I hope that in the next one we can go even better.”

The second Airwaves Ducati of Leon Camier then made his move up to fourth past Crutchlow at Park on lap 13 and was attempting to close and pass team-mate ‘Shakey’ but it wasn’t to be and he had to settle for fourth.

MSS Discovery Kawasaki’s Stuart Easton was forced to retire on lap four on his first race appearance since his Snetterton practice crash.

Sykes crashes but still claims pole

Sykes 2008

Rizla Suzuki make history in new qualifying, Tom Sykes claimed his second pole position at Cadwell Park in the new Swan Combi 50 – Roll for Pole qualifying session despite crashing on his final flying lap in the last 20 seconds of the session.

Sykes said: “The other boys really kept me on my toes in that session. I had put a decent lap time in but was still second on my pit board so I just went out there and was riding on the limit. I just tried a little bit harder on the final attempt and tried something different going in to the chicane – it didn’t work and I ended up on the floor. I struggled in the rain but it was much better this afternoon. It was key to be on the front row here tomorrow and if I can make a good start we should get another good result for the Rizla Suzuki team. It would be fantastic to get another win here and I have to thank the team for working so hard in that qualifying session.”

With just ten minutes on the clock in the final shootout to decide the top ten positions it was Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne on the Airwaves Ducati who put in the first flying lap with six minutes to go.

Then it was Cal Crutchlow’s turn at the top, with the HM Plant Honda rider bettering Byrne’s lap almost immediately afterwards, putting Byrne back to second ahead of Leon Haslam. Crutchlow’s lap time was the fastest of the weekend but it just wasn’t enough as in the same minute Sykes posted an ever quicker lap to put himself ahead.

Leon Haslam will start from the second row in fourth place tomorrow; the rows on the grid will consist of three riders. Leon Camier on the second of the Airwaves Ducati’s was fifth.

Bennetts British Superbike Championship, Swan Combi 50 – Roll for Pole qualifying result:

Rap-up on the BSB from Thruxton

Shane Byrne transferred pole position into race win to claim his fourth win at Thruxton Circuit on his return to Ducati (20th April). The move to a Pirelli control tire for 2008 provided a frenetic and close-fought opening race of the season. With a level playing field in terms of rubber, it was left to individual teams to select a favourable compound around the fast and abrasive 2.356mile Hampshire circuit.

In race two Cal Crutchlow looked to be in dominant form, making the early running in the search for his debut victory, as he led the field for the first 12 laps. However, the sheer grunt of the new Ducati 1098 proved too much for Crutchlow and Shane Byrne expertly bided his time before making his move for the lead on his Airwaves Ducati on the 13th lap. A rejuvenated Michael Rutter on the North West 200 Ducati, left his passing manoeuvre until lap 18 to claim third position ahead of Leon Haslam.

Shane Byrne, Airwaves Ducati:

“I have to thank Airwaves Ducati for giving me the opportunity this season. The whole team has worked so hard this weekend, and after the disappointment of Brands Hatch it’s fantastic to finally get the season off to a winning start.”

Race 2:

HM Plant Honda rider, Cal Crutchlow emphatically claimed his maiden British Superbike win in a second race marred by a seventh lap incident involving Tom Sykes’ flying Rizla Suzuki collecting Rob Mac Racing’s Karl Harris. The Yamaha rider was struck by the flying Suzuki and, once up on his feet, rushed to the Thruxton medical centre. After the short enforced delay, race distance was altered to 15 laps, without Karl Harris and Adam Jenkinson who unfortunately crashed his Yamaha at the 160mph right-hand Church corner.

Tom Sykes dusted down his leathers to storm into an early lead, but HM Plant Honda’s Cal Crutchlow powered to the front at Club on lap 2, never to look back. As Crutchlow pulled the pin on the way to his debut British Superbike win, a mammoth battle unfolded in the battle for podium positions between Sykes, Rutter, Byrne and Haslam.

Haslam retired at the end of the sixth lap, leaving the way open for Race One winner, Byrne, to hunt down Rutter for second position. Byrne finally made his move two laps from home to claim second on the Airwaves Ducati. Michael Rutter consolidated third position and in doing so, the NW 200 Ducati riders first double podium race meeting since Knockhill in 2005.

As the 2008 Bennetts British Superbike Championship moves on to Round 3 at Oulton Park over the May Bank Holiday, Cal Crutchlow and Shane Byrne jointly head the points table.

Cal Crutchlow, HM Plant Honda:

“I knew we had it in us to take the win but to be honest, I didn’t think it would come this early in the season. I controlled the race from exactly where I wanted to be – at the front – but didn’t expect to win by so much. All the boys at HM Plant Honda have done a fantastic job through pre-season testing to now. I know there’ll be more wins to come this season.”

Fuchs-Silkoline British Supersport

Race 1:

Steve Brogan (HM Plant Honda) and Glen Richards (MAP Embassy Racing) re-ignited their 2007 season long Superstock battle throughout the 18-lap Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport season opener at Thruxton (20th April). Richards made the better start from pole but could not hold off the advances of Liverpudlian Brogan, who snatched the lead as early as the second lap on the fast approach to Church corner. The ensuing 16 laps proved the perfect testament to close racing that the Pirelli single tire regulations had brought with the onset of the 2008 season. The notoriously fast and abrasive Thruxton Circuit lived up to its reputation of producing thrilling race action.

A red flag incident at the Club Chicane at the culmination of lap six involving Dennis Hobbs and James Webb saw the safety car deployed for the following three laps. With the action recommencing again on lap 10, Richards timed his move perfectly to pass Brogan just over the start/finish line to lead the restart. However, Brogan regained his rightful place at the front on the run up Woodham Hill into Club out-braking the reigning National Superstock Champion in a battle of nerves.

Australian, Glen Richards applied constant pressure on the Fireblade-mounted Brogan, allowing Chris Martin the chance to elevate his Gearlink Kawasaki into a podium position and quickly close ground on the leading duo. The final four laps saw a flurry of action, with Martin briefly stealing second on the final lap. Brogan held a defensive line into Club for the final time, taking the chequered flag less than a tenth of a second from Richards.

The breath-taking action takes a two-week break before lining up on the grid for round three at Oulton park over the May Bank Holiday (3rd-5th May).

Focussed Events KTM Super Duke Battle

Guest journalist rider, Alastair Fagan capitalised on a front row start to claim the win at the end of the opening race of the day at Thruxton (20 April).

The Fast Bikes Magazine journalist took the lead from 2007 Championship runner-up Kelvin Reilly with a trademark Thruxton overtaking manoeuvre on the brakes on the run up Woodham Hill into the Club Chicane, as the riders looked to complete the opening lap.

Fagan began to power his Pirelli-shod KTM 990 Super Duke into a healthy lead as Wood made an identical move on Reilly the following lap to kickstart his challenge for the lead. As Wood opened up the legs of the V-twin KTM, Reilly embarked on a furious race-long battle with Edmeades, Gault and Heal, that would see a last corner move at the notorious Club Chicane push both Reilly and Gault out of contention for the final podium position. James Edmeades stole the final opportunity to claim third position and 16 valuable championship points.

Dave Wood closed the gap on Fagan’s lead to just 0.3s on the final lap but lost valuable ground as the pair battled to pass back-markers, settling for second at the chequered flag.

Alastair Fagan:

“It wasn’t an easy race. I managed to pull a 2 second gap but then Wood started to catch me again in the back-markers towards the end of the race. Obviously I’m pleased that KTM gave me the opportunity to race today and I’m happy to take the win at my home circuit.”

Crutchlow Fastest Ahead, Haslam second

Cal Crutchlow underlined his determination to enjoy maiden race winning glory in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship by comfortably heading the free practice leaderboard at the wind-swept Thruxton in Hampshire.

The HM Plant Honda rider had been on the pace throughout, upping the tempo in the afternoon session to send a warning to his rivals ahead of what will be opening race action in the country’s premier racing series.

“I’m pleased with the lap time but I have to be consistent and we are working on the machine set-up to achieve that,” said the 22 year old Coventry rider. “It is so open here, and the strong wind is difficult, but the gusts made things worse.

“It meant changing my style a little, but things are good, and having had a pole start at Croft last season, I am hoping to replicate that and then have two good podium finishes in the races.”

Crutchlow’s team-mate Leon Haslam could, however, upset those plans. He ran a little over half a second down, with a time of 1m 15.652secs, commenting: “I’m getting the times that I wanted to and have also done a full race distance runs, working on the tires. I just need to find a bit more consistency.”

Karl Harris, like Crutchlow a former winner of the British Supersport title, was third best aboard the Rob Mac Yamaha. He had topped the times during the morning, and then bettered that lap by half a second, illustrating his competitiveness.

Former champion, and pole starter for the snow aborted Brands Hatch round, Shane Byrne, riding the Airwaves Ducati, set the fourth best time, 1m 15.970secs, running just ahead of Tom Sykes aboard the locally prepared Rizla Suzuki.

“It is very abrasive so it has good grip but is hard on tires,” said the Huddersfield rider, adding: “It is my team’s home round so I will be trying my hardest.”

Michael Rutter ran him close, lapping in 1m 16.152secs aboard the NorthWest 200 Ducati with Stuart Easton (MSS Discovery Kawasaki) and Simon Edwards riding the Lloyds British Jentin Yamaha in close contention.

John Laverty, riding the BuildbaseNW200 Ducati, topped the Daily Star qualifiers, recording a best lap in 1m 17.183secs, to be marginally faster than his brother Michael, riding the championship class Relentless Suzuki.

Aussie Billy McConnell and Leon Camier completed the top twelve with Chris Burns riding the STP MV Agusta a further two places back, but the second of the Cup – a race within a race for Independent teams and riders – qualifiers.

Steve Mercer, three quarters of a second down on Burns, headed the next pack of Cup qualifiers: James Buckingham, Malcolm Ashley and Michael Howarth.
